What is encryption?
Encryption is the manipulation of data to prevent accurate interpretation by anyone but authorised users. Data is converted into cipher text (which is unintelligible to both humans and machines) by processing it with an encryption algorithm that uses an Encryption Key. When the data is required, the cipher text is reprocessed, using the same Encryption Key, to convert it back to plain text. The encryption mechanism employs a level of complexity that ensures that, even if an attacker knows the encryption method used, the number of calculations required to decode the text without the Encryption Key make it unfeasible.
